Sustainability Intern (Paid) – Summer 2025


Location: Newport, RI (In-person Thursdays + remote weekday check-ins)
Compensation: $15/hour | Approx. 8–10 hrs/week

newportFILM is looking for a passionate and reliable Sustainability Intern to support our zero waste efforts during our celebrated Outdoors summer documentary series—a 10-week community film program held at stunning locations throughout Newport.

Internship Duration: Late June – Early September 2025
Schedule: Thursdays, 4–11 PM (on-site); flexible Zoom/email check-ins during the week
Eligibility: Applicants must be Rhode Island residents or currently enrolled at a Rhode Island–based college or university

Required On-Site Event Dates:

  • June: 6/26

  • July: 7/2, 7/10, 7/17, 7/24, 7/31

  • August: 8/7, 8/14, 8/21, 8/28

What You’ll Do:

  • Set up, oversee, and break down zero waste stations at each film event

  • Lead and educate weekly “Green Team” volunteers on waste-sorting best practices

  • Record weekly sustainability metrics (trash, recycling, compost weights; vendor compliance)

  • Coordinate with our sustainability consultant and newportFILM event staff

  • Interact with attendees and promote sustainable practices in a fun, engaging way

Ideal Candidate:

  • Interested in sustainability, composting, and environmental education

  • Comfortable speaking with the public and managing volunteers

  • Proficient in Excel (for tracking and reporting metrics)

  • Has reliable transportation

This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to environmental change while gaining hands-on experience in event planning, sustainability operations, and community engagement—within one of Rhode Island’s most beloved nonprofit arts organizations.
