newportFILM, is a non-profit, year-round documentary film series now in its 13th year. newportFILM inspires, educates, and entertains by presenting current and impactful documentaries that build community and propel change.
Our outdoor series brings award-winning documentaries, live music, interviews with filmmakers and subjects, local food vendors and lots of community spirit to Aquidneck Island’s beautiful outdoor spaces.

JOB DESCRIPTION
- newportFILM is seeking Event Management Interns to start in June of 2023. This position will work closely with the Director of Marketing and Partnerships and Engagement Manager. newportFILM Event Management Interns are critical to the overall operations of newportFILM’s flagship Summer Outdoors screening series and are responsible for setting up, deploying and breaking down weekly outdoor documentary film screenings on Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island. Interns will be immersed in large scale, public arts and culture event operations, learning and doing everything from event promotions, merchandising, public engagement, talent coordination, public safety, permitting, vendor and community relations, customer service, volunteer engagement and digital media strategy. This is an active role with the vast majority of time spent outdoors in ever-changing environments. The ideal candidate will be comfortable in the face of changing circumstances and open to learning new and adaptive strategies towards executing flawless public arts and culture programming.
- *Please note that this internship does involve lifting and moving equipment. Applicants should be able to lift 50lbs of equipment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
- The Ideal Candidate works well in a team setting, thrives in a fast-paced work environment, is highly accountable and is energized by event planning and management. We expect previous experience or an enthusiastic willingness to learn about:
- Creating a welcoming environment for the public through responsive communication;
- Special Event planning & coordination for various types of events;
- Managing large events through organized systems duplicated week over week;
- Maintaining and organizing event equipment;
- Working with a team in a fast paced work environment;
- Assisting with various office tasks and Formatting event documents in Word, Excel, Google Drive (Sheets, Docs, Forms).
HOURS & COMMITMENT
- This internship will begin in June & end in August/September. Intern will work in our Newport on-site at events 12-15 hours per week. Interns are required to be at all newportFILM Thursday screenings which are tentatively scheduled from 6/29-8/31 with approximate hours beginning at 1pm until the conclusion of the event at night. Additional days and hours to be determined. An orientation will be held prior to the series launch in early June.
- An applicant seeking college credit must be enrolled in a college/university. Interns receiving credit must complete the required hours specified by both their respective college/university and newportFILM. Documentation and communication from college or university deeming a student eligible for credit must be submitted with application and completed prior to internship start date.
PAYMENT: Internship payment is bi-weekly at a rate of $13/hr

Our outdoor series brings award-winning documentaries, live music, interviews with filmmakers and subjects, fabulous food, and lots of community spirit to Aquidneck Island’s beautiful outdoor spaces.2023 Internships: For-credit and not-for-credit for college students or recent college graduates seeking to acquire hands-on experience in social media and event marketing.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:
This position will assist the Director of Marketing & Partnerships and learn all aspects of festival/event marketing to increase brand/event awareness and grow the organization’s presence and community engagement across social media platforms.
- Assist with design and execution of weekly social media and email marketing campaigns for Summer 2023
- Brainstorm campaign ideas with Marketing Director/Team
- Track weekly mentions of sponsors across social media platforms – pull screenshots
- Track social media engagement to identify high performing ideas
- Work with photographer at events to ensure proper photos are taken each week
- Assist with on site social media partnership obligations
Intern would work in our Newport office 10 hours per week.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
- The ideal candidate for this position is a student seeking a Marketing/PR/Communications degree, or someone looking to get hands-on social media &/or events experience.
- Proficiency and understanding of social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook)
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Experience with Photoshop, Canva, or other graphic design tools is a plus, but not required
- Familiarity with the newportFILM and documentary film

DATES AND HOURS: This internship will begin in early June & end in late August/early September. Hours are 10/week; internship hours are Thursday 1-11 and 10 am – 2 pm on Fridays.
