5 years has never flown by so fast… We’re thrilled to kick off our newportFILM OUTDOORS series by celebrating our 5th anniversary since our launch in 2010! Without the overwhelming support from the community, we would never have been able to have had such a successful first 5 years. Although there are too many amazing memories to count, we’re celebrating this benchmark by sharing our top 5 favorite newportFILM moments from the past 5 years… SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN Jane Pickens Theater, July 2012 newportFILM’s most magical musical moment to date was when subject of the film, Rodriguez, graced the stage for a private serenade after the screening of Searching For Sugar Man (and to no surprise, with a standing ovation from the audience). He and Director Malik Bendjelloul answered the audience’s burning questions after the film. The film went on to win Best Documentary in the 2013 Oscars. ETHEL International Tennis Hall of Fame & Jane Pickens Theater, August 2012 After joining us at our annual Summer Benefit at International Tennis Hall of Fame, Director Rory Kennedy and film subject, Ethel, impressed the audience at Jane Pickens Theater in all their humbleness after the screening of the 5-time Emmy nominated film, Ethel. KNUCKLEBALL! Casino Theater, August 2012 When you announce Tim Wakefield is coming to Newport, this New England community reacts. Red Sox and baseball lovers alike clamoured to the Casino Theater for our screening of Knuckleball! featuring the baseball great. Kids got in on the action with a private pitching clinic put on by the Newport Gulls and Wakefield (and likely made many kid’s dreams come true). The film was then followed with a Q&A with Wakefield and the film’s writer/producer (& newportFILM board member), Christine Schomer. DINER EN BLANC Norman Bird Sanctuary, September 2013 It doesn’t take much to encourage Aquidneck Islanders to dress in their summer whites. To commemorate the film, Diner En Blanc’s, infamous popup white dinner parties, newportFILM hosted a white party before the film in Mabel’s Garden at Norman Bird Sanctuary. Dressed head to toe in white, both party & movie guests spared no detail paying homage to the film. DIOR & I Doris Duke’s Rough Point, August 2014 1000+ filmgoers gathered together for a fabulously fashionable evening on the lawn of Doris Duke’s Rough Point. Guests cut no corners (think bear skin rugs, sprawling tablescapes and caviar) for the event’s “Chicest Picnic Contest” judged by King & Queen of New England lifestyle, Kiel James Patrick and Sarah Vickers, Newporter and author of books on gracious living, Bettie Pardee, & Farmesthetics’s Brenda Brock. Be sure to check out this summer’s film line-up, kicking off Thursday, July 2nd!: www.bit.ly/nFfilms – Intern Angie
