ABOUT THE FILM:

Starting in 1967 with practically no knowledge of the music industry Claude Nobs’ enthusiasm, drive and passion for music turned a sleepy town on the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland into a mecca for the greatest international recording artists of all time, one that shaped the history of live music forever.

Over 50 years later the story of the Montreux Jazz Festival and its visionary creator is told by those who experienced its golden years. Using unseen archive material and brand new interviews we take the viewer back in time to hear the trumpet of Miles Davis, the piano of Nina Simone and the guitar of BB King echo through five decades ofcandid recollections by dozens of the festival’s star performers and industry insiders.

The production features performances at the festival from some of the 20th century’s most important musical icons including Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Muddy Waters, Santana, Nina Simone, Etta James, Carol King (Eta and Carol’s first
European performance), Van Morrison, Miles Davis, Sting, David Bowie, Prince, James Brown and Wyclef Jean. Alongside these performances are interviews with Elvis Costello, Jack White, George Clinton, Carlos Santana, Buddy Guy, Keith Richards,
Herbie Hancock and executive producer Quincy Jones.

Although the artists occupy a prominent place in the film, the main protagonist of this incredible story is Claude Nobs, nicknamed Funky Claude by Deep Purple. We discover how he managed to transform his home town into an unmissable live music event. We
explore the story of his childhood and the challenges he had to face in a conservative society often hostile to his ambitious projects, sexuality and larger than life personality.

This eccentric lover of music created an environment for artists where they could freely express themselves and collaborate across genres and cultures. And when they did, Claude filmed and recorded everything in meticulous detail. Claude established a vast
archive of filmed performances that would eventually be recognised for its immense cultural value, resulting in a UNESCO certified archive of extraordinary depth and quality, much of which has never previously seen the light of day.

From one of a kind live performances, to jaw dropping b-roll and interview content, this film provides a completely immersive window into a unique creative world, where the brightest lights from the golden era of jazz, blues, rock, world, pop and soul would come
to perform, create, collaborate and revitalize, with the beauty of the Swiss Alps as their backdrop.

As a man who epitomized the values of diversity and inclusivity long before they became the cultural norm, Claude was deeply loved by the artist community. Consequently, the producers have experienced an unprecedented level of co-operation and consent from artists and their estates, enabling us to bring to the screen a truly dazzling array of talent and to tell Claude’s story through its highs and lows, its triumphs and its tragedies. Never before has a documentary of this magnitude been made on the history of the Montreux Jazz Festival offering a breath-taking panorama of half a century of music history.
