newportFILM will host a warm winter clothing drive to benefit resettled refugees with Dorcas International. For each warm winter item you bring to the screening, you’ll receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win prizes from newportFILM!

In order to maintain the safest space possible for guests, artists, and staff, masks and proof of vaccination will be required for entry to all events. Vaccination cards or clear photocopies/phone pictures of your vaccination card will be considered acceptable. Note that a current negative COVID test will NOT suffice for entry. Venue capacity will be limited to provide for safer distancing. FLEE tells the story of Amin Nawabi as he grapples with a painful secret he has kept hidden for 20 years, one that threatens to derail the life he has built for himself and his soon to be husband. Recounted mostly through animation to director Jonas Poher Rasmussen, he tells for the first time the story of his extraordinary journey as a child refugee from Afghanistan.

 

Film will be followed by a discussion lead by Kathy Cloutier, Executive Director of Dorcas International and Ana Gonzalez, Radio Producer and Host, founder Mosaic podcast.

Kathy Cloutier

As a seasoned, visionary and versatile executive with more than two decades of leadership experience within both the non-profit and private sectors, Kathy Cloutier is a steadfast proponent of equity, opportunity and social justice. She is a founding member of Rhode Island’s Immigrant Coalition; Treasurer of the International Charter School’s Board of Trustees, the Greater Providence Adult Education Consortium, and Rhode Island’s Refugee Support Network. Kathy also serves on the RITELL Advisory Council, and is a graduate of Leadership Rhode Island’s class of 2015.

Kathy Cloutier is now in her 8th year serving as the Executive Director of Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island, a multi-service organization assisting close to 5,000 immigrants, refugees and established residents in need each year, as they seek to build a successful life here in Rhode Island.

Ana Gonzalez

Ana is a podcast producer and host living in Rhode Island. She was the founding producer of Mosaic, The Public’s Radio award-winning podcast on immigrant experiences. Ana’s goal with her current work in audio storytelling is to amplify voices and stories that mainstream overlooks and to do so with utmost empathy, nuance, and willingness to learn. Her main objective is to create sustainable communities around storytelling and empower people to speak their truths to power. Ana is graduate of Brown University.
