we are super excited to kick off this new monthly blog series because there are so many gosh darn awesome organizations and businesses on aquidneck island. when we love something, we want you to love it too. introducing this month’s community spotlight…

WHO: friends of ballard park

WHAT: non-profit organization promoting the preservation of newport’s only nature preserve, the 13 acre ballard park

WHERE: ruggles avenue across from the rogers high school parking lot

WHY: we love them over the past 10 years, friends of ballard park has reformed what was a graffitti’d dumping ground into a community space with events and educational programs. “the park has several different ecosystems — a vernal pond, quarry, forested trails and abuts a salt marsh which serve as stunning backdrops for interactive, hands-on learning,” said executive director, colleen mcgrath.

from their summer ‘movies on the rocks’ series that brings back old family film favorites like E.T., to their bedazzled winter illuminated garden, friends of ballard park covers the gamut season to season. and most of ballard parks events are FREE!

DON’T MISS ballard park’s annual pumpkin tour THIS saturday, october 13 – it’s a must-do with the kids. and let us know if you spot the newportFILM pumpkin installation! what is colleen looking forward to most at this year’s pumpkin tour? “it’s always fun when a child finds the pumpkin they carved and is able to point it out to their parents. i’m awed every year by their creativity and skill.”
