Q: Is there anything different this year?
A: We’re excited to announce that we’ll have filmmakers and/or film subjects at every screening this year! Filmmaker conversations will take place before the film this season. After the live music, we’ll welcome our guests for a brief conversation just prior to the film starting.
Q: Are there tickets?
A: There are no tickets for newportFILM Outdoors screenings. We encourage you to use the “I’m Interested” button on the film page to help us anticipate audience size. Please note that indicating interest does not guarantee a spot if we need to move indoors due to weather.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: The suggested donation is $10 per screening event. We ask that you offer what you can!
Q: Where are the events held?
A: Every Thursday, from June 26th through August 28th, newportFILM screens a new documentary at a different outdoor location. Please check the individual film pages for locations.
Q: When do the films start each week?
A: We screen at sunset each week. Check the individual film page for the exact time, as it changes throughout the summer with the shifting sunset.
Q: What are the facilities like?
A: newportFILM has fresh porta-potties delivered to each outdoor venue weekly. They are clean and stocked when attendees arrive. At our newportFILM tent, you’ll find water, bug spray, and sunblock available. Some comfy newportFILM wear is also available for purchase. Onsite medics are present at each outdoor event.
Q: Will there be food vendors?
A: Yes! Lots of delicious food—served in compostable materials—will be available this summer. The individual film pages, e-blasts, and our Instagram showcase who will be onsite each week.
Q: Where can I park?
A: Since each film is screened at a different outdoor location, parking varies by venue. Some venues have ample parking; others have very little. Please check the individual film pages for parking details so you can plan ahead. We always encourage ride-sharing and other forms of transportation when possible because when parking fills up, there is no more parking. Bike racks are available at every event, and our friends at Bike Newport are helping with maps and community rides.
Q: Can I bring kids?
A: Everyone is welcome at newportFILM Outdoors events! We encourage you to read the film synopsis and watch the trailer (if available) to decide if the film is appropriate for the kids in your life, as some documentaries explore complex or mature themes.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: Dogs are welcome at some of our screenings. Dogs are not allowed at Chateau-sur-Mer, Rosecliff, Marble House, Rough Point, or Newport International Polo Grounds.
Q: Are there seats?
A: No. Our films are screened at iconic outdoor locations that offer wonderful greenspaces—perfect for picnic blankets and beach chairs.
Q: Do you have a visual?
A: Sure thing! Check out our 2024 Outdoors highlights video to see what newportFILM Outdoors is all about.
Q: Can I bring my own food?
A: Of course! newportFILM is all about picnics. Bring your own or purchase great food from local vendors—you decide! We’re all about carry in / carry out.
Q: What’s CARRY IN / CARRY OUT?
A: We believe in leaving as little footprint as possible at the beautiful greenspaces we enjoy. So, we ask that you carry out whatever you carry in. (You’d be surprised what gets left behind.) Don’t worry—we have Zero Waste Stations with compost, recycle, and landfill bins, all staffed by friendly Green Team volunteers ready to help you sort it all out!
Q: Will there be popcorn?
A: You bet! We’ll be serving popcorn right up until the film starts. And yes, it’s still free!
Q: What happens if it rains?
A: Every film has a backup rain venue that is posted on the film page. Once we make a call — generally late in the morning the day of the event— we update the film page, send an e-blast, and post on social media to alert you of any venue change. Sometimes it rains during the day, which can prevent us from setting up technical gear or result in unsafe, soggy grounds. It’s always a tough call and we’ll do our best to stay outside.
Q: Is seating guaranteed if it rains?
A: Unfortunately, no. Our backup rain venues have limited seating capacity, so seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Q: I or someone in my life has accessibility issues and I need more details about the venue and the event. What do I do?
A: Please contact us directly about any specific accommodations you may need!
Q: I would like to volunteer at a newportFILM event.
A: That’s great news—we’d love to have you join us! Please complete this form and we’ll be in touch.
Q: It’s my first time—what do you recommend?
A: Welcome! Arrive early, and if you’re local, consider biking, walking, or ridesharing. Bring a chair and a blanket. Pack a picnic or enjoy food from our delicious vendors. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a layer for the evening chill. Be sure to stop by the newportFILM tent when you arrive to say hello!
Q: I have a question that you haven’t answered. What do I do?
A: Send us an email at info (at) newportfilm (dot) com or text/call us at 401-649-2784.
